Hanney claim point in eight goal thriller

Westminster entertained Hanney United in the Charity Shield Group C match at Netherton Road and with both sides having chances to win the game they ended up claiming a point a piece in a 4-4 draw. Both sides created chances early on in the game with Hanney’s Joe Richardson seeing his close range effort cleared off the line and Westminster’s Dave Humphreys heading over from close range when in a good position. Hanney took the lead on fifteen minutes after a free kick was fired into the Westminster’s box and Andrew Hope was on hand to fire home from close range through a crowd of players. It did not take long for Westminster to draw level when a Mike Hooton corner was headed home from close range by Humphreys and then both sides hit the post in a game which was now end to end. Then just before half time Westminster took the lead when a Andy Younie cross was inch perfect for Hooton who fired home from close range past Hanney keeper David Pimm.It was all Westminster at the start of the second half but they could not find the final touch in front of goal to go further clear but this did come on the hour mark when Younie was put through on goal took the ball around Pimm and fired home into the empty net. This seemed to fire up Hanney and they pulled a goal back five minutes later when veteran Steve Weeks fired home from close range past Westminster’s keeper Leigh Furze after good work from Sam Bishop. Then moments later Hanney drew level when a long cross was mishandled by keeper Furze and the ball fell kindly for Hanney’s Richardson who slotted home from close range. Both sides had half chances to take the lead until with five minutes remaining Westminster were awarded a free kick which was deflected onto the post only for substitute Max Watterson to fire home the rebound. Then when Westminster looked to play the rest of the game out Hanney drew level with minutes remaining when James Bishop latched onto a through ball took a touch and fired past the onrushing Furze to give Hanney a share of a very entertaining game.
