| Woodcote in seventh heaven after they reach the War Memorial Final (16-03-2024) | | |
| | | | | Woodcote Development put last week’s cup semi-final disappointment behind them when they posted a 7-1 victory over Lambourn Sports Reserves at East Hendred Football Ground in a game that would have been a lot closer had Lambourn had taken their first half chances. The game started with both sides creating half chances through the early exchanges with Lambourn’s Damien Harris seeing his close-range header go wide of the Woodcote post which followed with Woodcote’s Alex Curtis half volley going over the Lambourn cross bar when in a good position. Woodcote though took the lead with their next attack when Taylor put a fine through ball to Tom Brownlow and his low cross found Toby Nowell who fired first time past Lambourn keeper Seb Buck from just inside the box. Lambourn should have levelled the scores minutes later when Dan Glozier ran onto a fine through ball but could only fire wide of the post with only the Woodcote keeper to beat. Then on the half hour mark Lambourn had a glorious chance to level the scores when Harris was put through on goal, but his initial shot was saved on the line by Woodcote defender Charlie Wagstaff and the rebound fell to Lambourn’s Kieron Ratcliffe whose close range effort was blocked on the six yard line also by Wagstaff and the ball fell to Harris who then headed the ball over the bar from close range and onto the roof of the net. Just before the half time whistle blew Lambourn’s Tom Henderson saw his long-range effort tipped around the post by the outstretched keeper which followed with Lambourn’s Billy Sanday firing over when in a good position. Woodcote got the dream start in the second half with minutes gone when Nowell was put through on goal took a touch and fired home past keeper Buck and into the net. Both sides then saw half chances go begging before Woodcote’s Nowell claimed his hat-trick when firing home from the edge of the box after good work from Brownlow. Ten minutes later it was 4-0 when following a long free kick Brownlow headed the ball back across the Lambourn six-yard box where it fell to Ben Morgan who fired home from close range. Then with around twenty minutes remaining Woodcote got their fifth when an Andy Taylor free kick from thirty yards out flew over keeper Buck and nestled into the top corner of the net which followed minutes later with Woodcote adding a sixth when Nowell put through Archie Clark on goal he took a touch and fired the ball past the advancing keeper Buck and into the net. It seemed now that every Woodcote attack brought a goal and Taylor then made it 7-0 when following a goal kick the ball was headed back by a Lambourn defender and it fell to Taylor who neatly chipped the ball over the advancing Buck and into the net from around twenty yards out. In the dying moments of the game Lambourn were awarded a penalty following a push and Sanday fired the ball home from twelve yards which followed with Lambourn being reduced to ten men following a reckless challenge.
