Watlington Town Reserves hit eight on Steventon Green

Watlington Town Reserves travelled to Steventon Reserves and claimed all three points with an emphatic 7-2 victory on the Steventon Green in very cold conditions. Watlington started the better of the two sides and went into an early lead when Steven Outten headed home from a free kick from close range and minutes later they doubled their lead when Ryan Jesson shot come cross from twenty yards out floated over Steventon keeper Ben Nield and into the roof of the net. Then ten minutes later Watlington added a third when a long free kick from Ashley Dixon evaded everyone in the Steventon box and found its way into the far corner of the net. Steventon who were struggling to get a foot on the game created their first real chance when a fine run and shot from Danny Kellard went just wide of the far post. Watlington then added a fourth on the half hour mark when a fine ball from Fraser Wilson put through Ashley Dixon who kept his head and fired the ball past the onrushing Nield and into the net. It was not long before they added a fifth when Andy Gray chased down a long ball and his cross was misjudged by the keeper Nield and landed perfectly for Wallington’s Tom Bowden who tapped home from close range. Watlington then went close twice just before half time from Bowden and Neil Smith but were denied by good saves from Nield.Steventon came out for the second half and pulled a goal back within minutes of the restart when a long cross was mishandled by Watlington keeper Lee Bowden and the ball fell to Chris Bennett who fired home from an acute angle. Then moments later Steventon scored again when Phil Barton picked up the ball just outside the Watlington box and his cross evaded everyone including keeper Bowden and landed into the far corner of the net. Steventon were now in full swing and both Matthew Moxon and Gary Rudman had chances to add a third put saw their shots sail wide and over when in good positions. Then just after the hour mark Watlington should of added a sixth when Bowden found himself in space in the Steventon box but could only fire wide and minutes later from a corner the same player fired high and wide over the bar from twelve yards out. Steventon then had to change their keeper after an injury and veteran Marin Trower put on the gloves and made a great save when saving with his feet after Bowden had been put clean through on goal. Then from the resulting corner Watlington added a sixth when Bowden headed home from close range and the same player then made it seven and claimed his hat-trick when put clean through on the Steventon right he took a touch a fired past Trower from ten yards out. Then both sides had half chances but these were either saved or missed and as the light was fading Watlington made it 8-2 on the final whistle when Sam Carter-Knight fired home from twelve yards to secure a fine Watlington victory.
